DHS customer guide · Updated October 22, 2026

Before a bed bug furniture pickup.

A mattress, couch or other affected item needs a pickup plan before it moves through your property. Use this guide to prepare a request in Denver, Aurora or a nearby DHS service area.

Preparation supports staff review. It is not permission to move items or a confirmed appointment.

Start with a conversation

Tell DHS about a known or suspected infestation before requesting ordinary junk removal or donation pickup. Keep affected belongings out of donation piles. Contact DHS before carrying them through the building or staging them outside.

We coordinate specialty pickups with Lowry Place Residential Services. Staff review containment, safe handling and disposal-facility acceptance before any pickup is confirmed.

1. Describe the items and their condition

List the items you want removed, their quantities and approximate sizes. For example: one queen mattress, one box spring and a three-seat couch. Include bed frames, chairs, bagged belongings or other pieces that may be affected so DHS can review the whole requested load.

Explain what you know about the condition. It is fine to say that an infestation is suspected rather than confirmed. Tell us whether other items or areas may be affected and whether a pest-control company or property manager has provided instructions. Report prior treatment; do not assume that treatment clears an item for donation.

Photos of the items and access route can help with an estimate. Avoid including people, private documents or unrelated personal belongings in the pictures. Do not move an item simply to take a better photo.

2. Explain the carrying route and building access

Tell DHS where the items are now and what the crew would pass through to reach the loading area. Include stairs, tight corners, elevator access, long hallways, locked doors and parking restrictions. Mention any loading dock or elevator reservation your property requires.

Homes and apartments

Identify the room and floor. Share whether there are interior stairs, exterior steps, pets to secure or access instructions. If you rent, coordinate property access and shared-space requirements with your property manager.

Commercial and managed properties

Hotels, offices and apartment managers should identify the person who can authorize removal, the approved items, permitted loading times and the building contact. Do not include resident or guest names in a public-facing item list.

3. Confirm preparation before anything moves

DHS will review whether the approved items need wrapping, sealing, bagging, labeling or other preparation. Follow the instructions agreed for your specific job and the directions from your pest-control professional. Ask DHS if those instructions conflict or if you cannot prepare an item safely.

Do not assume a general mattress bag, a blanket or stretch wrap meets the job's requirements. Do not drag an uncovered item through common areas or put it in a donation pile while waiting for a response. If the condition or item list changes, contact DHS before pickup proceeds.

Removal and treatment are different jobs

DHS removes approved affected items; we do not diagnose infestations or provide extermination. Removing furniture alone does not establish that a property is free of bed bugs. A qualified pest-control professional can advise what to retain, treat or discard.

The U.S. EPA explains that bed bugs can travel with furniture and belongings and advises against automatically discarding everything. Read its bed bug prevention guidance and tips on treatment decisions.

4. Review the estimate and requested timing

Bed bug item removal requires a custom estimate. Item size and count, containment, access, carrying distance and disposal requirements affect the quote. Ordinary hauling load prices do not automatically apply to affected items.

DHS is open 24/7. You may ask about same-day or next-day availability and request an arrival window of at least 30 minutes. DHS reviews preparation, handling, price and availability before confirming a pickup. An online request remains pending DHS review after a successful submission; it does not reserve a confirmed appointment.

Your pickup discussion checklist

Check these as you gather the information. These boxes stay on this page only; they are not sent to DHS or saved as a booking.

No donation clearance: cleaning, wrapping or reported treatment does not make an affected item eligible for DHS donation. No dispatch authorization: completing this list does not authorize pickup.

Before-pickup questions

Do I have to throw out everything after finding bed bugs?

No. Item removal is not automatically necessary for every belonging and is not pest treatment. Discuss what can be treated or retained with a qualified pest-control professional before deciding what to discard.

Does wrapping or prior treatment make an item eligible for donation?

No. DHS keeps reported or suspected infested or contaminated items out of the donation stream. Cleaning, wrapping or reported treatment does not authorize donation through DHS.

Should I move an affected couch into a shared hallway?

Contact DHS and your property manager before moving it. DHS must review the containment and carrying route for the job. Do not stage affected items in shared areas before the plan is agreed.

Does completing this checklist confirm my pickup?

No. The checklist helps prepare for DHS review. Staff must review scope, containment, safe handling, disposal-facility acceptance, pricing and availability before confirming a pickup.
